“I wanted to catch the feeling of a bright and breezy summer day. The puffins make me think of old-time British sailors, and the color of their bills reminds me of the nautical flags and bunting decorating the sailing ships.” – Robert Bateman

Biography

Robert Bateman has been called the most famous living artist. He continues to paint and tour the world to promote conservation and preservation of nature. We have represented Robert Bateman for decades and are now the sole publisher and distributor of his reproductions. We are so honored to work with him and witness his success. He has made such a massive contribution to the art world and the natural world as an artist and educator of the earth’s most important resources.

Nature as a subject is becoming more and more popular as our environment is in peril. What better subject is there than the beautiful creatures we share this world with? Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once.

Bateman’s eye for composition is unparalleled. Each painting is a composed like a symphony, leading the eye to wander. From the backyards of North America to the sprawling plains of Africa. Robert Bateman captures nature the way it should be enjoyed. Above all he is a champion of wildlife. For this reason he has become a household name for art collectors.

“Often I am asked, especially by artists, where the ideas for my paintings come from. Out of the blue could be an answer. One was a red turban in front of a terra cotta wall – “Cardinal and Sumac.” “Cardinal and Wild Apples” grew out of Joni Mitchell’s song “The Big Yellow Taxi.” Abstract artist Clyfford Still’s work has inspired several paintings, “Sheer Drop – Mountain Goats,” “Descending Leopard,” and “Wadi Arava – Israeli Wolf.

Last year while visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art I saw another Clyfford Still incorporating a large black patch with little jagged windows of deep blue. The idea for a big Douglas Fir at night came to me at once. The sleeping ravens were an obvious added touch since we have both large fir trees and ravens on the hill above our house.” – Robert Bateman on Raven Roost

Ravens are one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, the highly intelligent Corvidae family, rivalling great apes and dolphins. For many indigenous cultures, the raven is a powerful symbol of creation, knowledge and transformation. Ravens are magical creatures, able to take the form of humans, animal, even in adamant objects. They are the keeper of secrets, often known as a trickster figure due to its mischief and curiosity. Ravens are also seen as a creative and cunning helper to the creator who can shape shift and bring important messages for humans. Like homo sapiens, ravens plan for the future, have exceptional memories, particularly for faces and past events. Living in complex, social groups, ravens can recognize individuals and remember relationships. Ravens engage in complex, social behaviors, such as tactical deception and comforting others after conflicts, families are formed and they stick together. With a large repertoire of distinct calls, ravens can communicate a wide range of messages. They are also skilled mimics, able to imitate various sounds, including human speech. Ravens are known throughout the world as messengers, and tricksters. Nature’s Scene is a family business and approaching 50 years. I am excited to release these tow Raven pieces, a transformative new beginning we have all been hoping for.

“One of the wonderful sights in the kingdom of birds is the aerial acrobatics of ravens. These are often accompanied by surprising and complex vocalizations. For years I have been trying different ways to paint these dramatic black birds. Recently I was looking through my art books and happened upon a large, soft-covered book describing the development of a single painting by Robert Motherwell. Motherwell, along with Franz Kline and Clyfford Still, is one of my favourite abstract painters. The painting in question, which was installed in the National Gallery in Washington, DC, is called “Reconciliation Elegy”. Because I am a naturalist and have been looking for a flying raven idea for years, a light popped on in my brain. I used Motherwell’s composition as a starting point and added my own photo reference and sketches to come up with the final piece. I included the word reconciliation in my title as a respectful tip of the hat to Robert Motherwell. Perhaps the ravens have had a nuptial spat and are now reconciling.” – Robert Bateman

31” x 31” – Giclee Canvas – AP #6/19

“In the Connemara district of Ireland there are a number of wild and lonely lakes. If you take a boat to a certain island on one of them you will find a path winding into a woodland. The path leads to a clearing and there are the ruins of an early 12th century Christian church. There was a dreadful and dark time for the fledgling Christianity.

Vikings and barbarians were busy robbing and destroying the fragments of the Roman Empire. In remote corners little bands of priests kept the flame of learning and literature alive. The Irish monks were of vital importance in hiding and maintaining the spark of civilization that was there when stability and security returned to Europe (that is, if one can describe the feudal system as stable and secure). I felt that this clearing and this church with the sky for its roof had a very spiritual presence. I cast the painting in green tones … a spiritual colour to me. I added the barn owl, which could have been there. This bird is near the earliest owls on an evolutionary scale. It also has deep symbolic roots in the beliefs of the pre-Christian Europeans. I like the way the owls face echoes the eroded faces of the saints embedded in the Romanesque arch.” – Robert Bateman

Call of the Wild – Bald Eagle – 19 1/4″ x 25 1/2″ – Original Lithograph – 950 Edition

“The Bald Eagle is a bird found in the kind of countryside I especially like. It may be found in a variety of habitats, but the common factor is a sense of space, privacy and the presence of water. Luckily, there are still large areas of North America that are in this category. Unfortunately, in the last few decades this was not enough

The use of agricultural pesticides, especially DDT, caused contamination even in remote areas. Entire watersheds were suddenly polluted, and the pesticides were concentrated in the larger fish which form an important part of the eagle’s diet. This caused infertility and a weakening of the eggshells. In a few years, the eagles were wiped out in much of their former territory. Now that DDT has been banned, there is evidence that they are coming back to these areas.

In this painting I have shown this bird in a dynamic calling pose. Although there is a fierce, bold thrust to the visual image, if you could hear the actual cry, you would probably be disappointed. It is a rather faint, high-pitched “chittering” noise. I have used the angular thrust of the dead tree to add to the force of the bird. In the far distance is a flock of gulls hinting at the proximity of water, which is the inevitable component of his habitat” – Robert Bateman

Winter Sunset – Moose by Robert Bateman.

“Winter is an excellent time to see the larger animals that do not hibernate. The leaves are not on the trees which gives better visibility; the snow makes wildlife easier to see, and you can follow the tracks. In addition, the animals tend to come down to the river valleys in concentrations that can be more easily observed. Moose do not have as hard a time in winter as do deer and the fur bearing animals. Bears, of course, hibernate, and beavers spend the winter in their ponds under the ice. A moose is designed for winter. Their long legs are a great help in striding through the snow, and the dense fur keeps out the cold. They can eat twigs of many different trees but are greatly helped by some open water so that the aquatic vegetation can supplement their diet.

In this painting I have shown a bull moose about to cross a beaver dam in early winter. The pond has not yet frozen. Although the sun has set, there is a glow in the sky which, in this case, shows mostly in the water. Besides portraying a mood of time and place, the interesting challenge, for me, was to show the textures and colours of the water, ice and snow. They are all H2O, yet their physical properties do different things with light.” – Robert Bateman

“I was honoured to be commissioned to do a painting which was to be the present of the Government of Canada to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales when he was married. The suggested subject of the painting was loons, which delighted me as they are among my favourite birds, with wonderful associations with the Canadian northland. Their ringing call is one of the north’s most memorable sounds. The setting of the painting is in Killarney Park in northern Ontario, and the pre-Cambrian quartzite cliff, the clear water and the plants and bushes are all very typical of this part of Canada. Looking at these cliff faces is almost like looking at a painted mural. Nature has been working on it, building up a pattern of lichens and mosses and ferns. I wanted to
recreate this mural effect, and established a strong abstract shape that is repeated in the reflection in a broken-up, many-faceted impressionist way. The scene is placid, but the composition’s interest comes from the tension set up by having the loons in the bottom right-hand corner and the overhanging hemlock branches up on the left. The lighting is fundamental to the effect of this painting. I put almost the entire painting in shadow, with the accents coming from the highlights. The early morning light is striking across the scene, picking up just a bit of the cliff face and the heads of the two adult loons.” – Robert Bateman

“On a visit to the Queen Charlotte Islands, a Haida elder guided my wife, Birgit, and me to a secluded spot on a peaceful bay. There, Bill Reid’s canoe
sat at a lonely anchorage. It was Reid who directed the hollowing of the 50-foot canoe from a single ancient red cedar according to traditional Haida designs, following their traditional method. The canoe was the first of its kind in almost one hundred years. Powered by 20 Haida paddlers, it made an epic 558-mile journey from Vancouver to Skidegate and truly earned its name, Loo Taa (Wave Eater). Seeing the canoe was, for me, a kind of spiritual experience. And although there was no raven present on that day, in my mind’s eye, I saw one. To the Haida, the raven is a wily trickster-transformer who created the world, and I could see him, hovering over the canoe, perfectly centered.” – Robert Bateman
