“If a polar bear is a dangerous animal, it becomes really dangerous when it has cubs; but if there is no danger to the young, one cannot imagine a more peaceful mother. In Mother of Pearls, I wanted to have the feeling of being part of that family, close to that big, soft, wild mother.”,- Carl Brenders

Carl Brenders Biography

As a student of the Fine Arts Academy of Antwerp, Brenders honed his skills of high-realism. His career began while illustrating animals for publications such as Nature’s Hidden World. This book teaches with stunning detail the habits and habitats of the creatures of the European countryside. Therefore it was perfect for an artist to truly understand his subject. It was only natural to progress into the fine art world. Indeed he became one of the finest painters of the natural world.

Carl Brenders’ paintings receive awards in numerous art shows and can be found in many prestigious collections. He is collected by The Ford Collection, The National Museum of Wildlife Art and the Woodson Art Museum. His accolades include the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, SC. The National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY and Bennington Center for the Arts, VT.

Biography

Robert Bateman has been called the most famous living artist. He continues to paint and tour the world to promote conservation and preservation of nature. We have represented Robert Bateman for decades and are now the sole publisher and distributor of his reproductions. We are so honored to work with him and witness his success. He has made such a massive contribution to the art world and the natural world as an artist and educator of the earth’s most important resources.

Nature as a subject is becoming more and more popular as our environment is in peril. What better subject is there than the beautiful creatures we share this world with? Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once.

Bateman’s eye for composition is unparalleled. Each painting is a composed like a symphony, leading the eye to wander. From the backyards of North America to the sprawling plains of Africa. Robert Bateman captures nature the way it should be enjoyed. Above all he is a champion of wildlife. For this reason he has become a household name for art collectors.

Robert Bateman’s Grizzly and Cubs – Original Painting – 24” X 36” – Acrylic on Board and hand-carved Walter Skor frame.

“The little grizzly cubs are doing what comes naturally to almost all young things – they are playing around, which gives one a sense of joy. The cubs, of course, are learning and practicing the skills of life while they’re having fun. And, like all higher mammals, the mother bear is hoping to teach them a thing or two. Luckily, the alpine meadow is unlikely to be developed by man, but the forested parts of the grizzly range and any areas near civilization are being exploited at an alarming rate. Across the bottom of this painting is an eroded bank. I deliberately put the cubs wrestling precariously at the lip of the bank as an allegory for eroding grizzly bear habitat and tumbling grizzly bear numbers.” – Robert Bateman

“Summer in the Arctic is wonderful. The days are long, and the plants and animals almost seem to be rushing to accomplish their activities before the coming of winter. After the long, dark winter out on the sea ice, the polar bears are able to come inland and enjoy a more varied diet. The winter food is almost entirely seals, but summertime brings small mammals, birds and eggs as well as a variety of plant life. It is an easy time for the bears.” – Robert Bateman

“In spite of their striking appearance, giant pandas are seldom seen in the wild. They do not like company, even from other pandas (except at mating time). I have been to panda country in China and did not expect to see one in the wild. We did see a few captive pandas at the breeding center at Woolong.

I put some faint shadows on the flank of this panda which could be shadows from cage bars but I would prefer to think of them as shadows from tall bamboo plants. Bamboo is their habitat and virtually their only food.”

“The panda’s habitat, however, made me feel right at home. As we climbed the narrow switchback trail that had begun in neatly terraced fields, we entered
a region of huge old-growth trees covered with snow that had fallen the previous night. (The panda’s depend on these old trees for dens.) Many of the tree species – pine, fir, hemlock, larch and birch – were familiar, as was the cool misty weather. Except for the dense bamboo thickets, I could almost have been walking in an old-growth forest of the Pacific Northwest. But above all, it is the bamboo under-story that makes these mountain habitats the place for pandas.

They feed almost exclusively on this difficult-to-digest and nutrient-poor plant. As descendants of the ancient carnivore ancestor of modern bears, pandas
lack the digestive adaptations that might allow them to use their plant food to the maximum, and so they compensate by eating constantly and digesting
quickly, on average eighteen pounds a day. To conserve energy, they generally sleep whenever they’re not eating, but this still leaves them close to the edge of malnutrition. When a species of bamboo suddenly flowers and dies off – as it may do once in many years – the panda population can drop catastrophically. This is a particular problem now that logging has cleared the lower slopes, where different bamboo species provided an alternate food source.” – Robert Bateman

Cook Forest Black Bear – 6″ x 8″ – 450 Edition Signed and Numbered Paper Print

“Since the days of the cave man, the bear has been an almost equal neighbor and competitor on this planet. In skirmishes over territory and food, the bears sometimes won. Ultimately, of course, humans took over virtually everything, and soon there was, quite literally, no contest.

A number of tribal peoples through the ages have considered the bear to be sacred (and even “the Keeper of the Land”). At the end of the 20th century caring and conscious people have realized that bears have an important place in our wild ecosystems. Even though we have the power to kill every last one, we choose not to do so out of a sense of nobility. This is why the protection of the Cook Forest, along with its bears, is a reflection of all that is best in the human spirit”. – Robert Bateman

“This might be the only time this grizzly pair has an interest in each other, courting season May-June. The male spends days following the female and building trust. Once she accepts him and they mate a number of times, the relationship is over and they part company. Bears are essentially loners.
Even though the female is carrying a fertilized egg, it does not implant into the womb until she has built up her fat reserves throughout the summer, in preparation for denning.
So the intricacy of nature is more complicated than we can know, as we merely and mostly observe from the outside – we truly only see the tip of the iceberg.”

“Black bears have a mixed relationship with humans. To our eyes, they are alternately dangerous, lovable and a nuisance. To their eyes, we are to be feared, ignored or exploited.

I have placed this bear in a benign mood resting under the shelter of a pine. They are not very active during sunny part of the day, but this one has chosen the top of a rocky cliff so that he can glance around in case anything interesting happens. These rocks are part of the pre-Cambrian shield and are a particular place I have known since childhood. I enjoyed the interplay of geological texture, dappled sun and shadow.” – Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman Bio

Robert Bateman has been called the most famous living artist. He continues to paint and tour the world to promote conservation and preservation of nature. We have represented Robert Bateman for decades and are now the sole publisher and distributor of his reproductions. We are so honored to work with him and witness his success. He has made such a massive contribution to the art world and the natural world. He is an artist and educator of the earth’s most important resources.

The animal takes full attention.
