“All animals play, especially young animals. This is very evident to anyone who has ever had a pet cat or dog. Play, however, often contains a foretaste of the real world of survival…competition, aggression and dominance are only slightly beneath the surface. A cat playing with a mouse is an experience that is not much fun for the mouse.

This is a young Siberian tiger I saw in a Canadian game park. His northern ancestry makes him perfectly suited to the snow. He is almost fully grown, but his youthful heart cannot resist a frolic in the freshly fallen snow and, bounding about, he has been doing pretend pounces and mock charges. Suddenly, he stops in mid-dash. The next second is unpredictable – he may roll on his back, or he may attack.” – Robert Bateman.

Sudden Move – Siberian Tiger is available.

John’s Seerey-Lester Biography

With work hanging at the White House and in permanent, private and Museum collections, throughout the world. John Seerey-Lester has become one of the most renowned of today’s wildlife and historic artists.

Before this, in his native England, John worked as a journalist, magazine editor and local government press officer before gaining enormous popularity in his home country for paintings of nostalgic scenes. Now he has combined that early fascination for historic themes with his continuing interest in wildlife to capture in paint. In a new series of paintings, John is revisiting the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in what is becoming his most successful work.

Above all, John has gained a reputation over the years for producing images with a narrative and which are both mysterious and mystical. Now he has taken this skill to produce a remarkable series of paintings depicting historic hunts of safari legends.

John has received many awards and much recognition for his outstanding achievements in the field of wildlife and sporting art. John was awarded the Ring of Freedom Award by the NRA, and was invited to become a member of the International Order of St. Hubertus. He was Knighted this year, by his Imperial and Royal Highness Archduke Andreas of Austria. John’s investiture took place in Houston, Texas, on March 23, 2013.

John lived in Florida, with his wife and fellow award winning wildlife artist Suzie whom he married in January 2000 on Useppa Island, in Southwest Florida.

Sadly, with his wife Suzie at his side, John lost his battle with cancer on May 19, 2020.

Biography

Robert Bateman has been called the most famous living artist. He continues to paint and tour the world to promote conservation and preservation of nature. We have represented Robert Bateman for decades and are now the sole publisher and distributor of his reproductions. We are so honored to work with him and witness his success. He has made such a massive contribution to the art world and the natural world as an artist and educator of the earth’s most important resources.

Nature as a subject is becoming more and more popular as our environment is in peril. What better subject is there than the beautiful creatures we share this world with? Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once.

Bateman’s eye for composition is unparalleled. Each painting is a composed like a symphony, leading the eye to wander. From the backyards of North America to the sprawling plains of Africa. Robert Bateman captures nature the way it should be enjoyed. Above all he is a champion of wildlife. For this reason he has become a household name for art collectors.

Under the Banyan Bengal Tiger – 9″ x 12″ – 950 Edition Signed and Numbered Paper Prints

“A trip to India is always a wonderful adventure. The word exotic is often over-used, but in the case of this varied and colorful subcontinent, it really does apply. The ancient history is still alive, and the people, from tribal villagers to sophisticated scientists, are friendly and fascinating. But the abundance of nature in such a densely populated place is always amazing. Birds are the most obvious, but many mammals, including large ones, can be seen.

Tigers in the wild are, of course, the ultimate goal of anyone interested in the natural world of India. They are also the hardest to see. On my first trip, I saw none. The second trip yielded two, and the third trip one. But on the last trip with a birding group and a tiger bias, we saw fifteen. Some sightings were from elephant back, some were fleeting glimpses, but the best one of my life was by the old gate in Ranthambore. There was a mother and two half-grown cubs relaxing not more than four yards from our vehicle.

This painting is one of those cubs in a tranquil but proud pose with the sprawling banyan or strangler fig roots as a background. I fervently hope that he and his relatives will thrive and carry on the Bengal tiger tradition for centuries to come.” – Robert Bateman

“The first shafts of sunlight begin to penetrate into the depths of the tropical rainforest. The haunting sounds of night are giving way to the dawn chorus of birds. Squawks, trills, and whistles echo through the vast leafy spaces, but almost never is a bird seen. It is time for the great hunter of the night to find a secluded place to curl up for the day. For a moment, the golden glow catches the proud feline head as the eyes gaze through the complex tangle of the world that is his domain.” – Robert Bateman

Path of the Panther – 20 1/2″ x 31″ – 1950 Edition Signed and Numbered Paper Prints

“Although the title Path of the Panther refers to the immediate trail the cougar in my painting will follow, there is another much wider meaning as well. The cougar or panther or puma is found from the southern tip of South America all the way up through Central America, the United States and the Canadian west. This setting is in Belize – an small English speaking Central American country on the Gulf of Mexico near Guatemala. My cougar is stalking along a cliff is beside a beautiful mountain stream and waterfall which our family has visited several times. We were not lucky enough to see a cougar there but they live in the area. I particularly l like the way the roots of the strangler fig and the shadows of the tropical plants sprawl across the rock face.

The wider meaning of Path of the Panther is embodied in the Spanish translation “Paseo Pantera”. This is a phrase coined by Wildlife Conservation International for an excellent project. The proposal envisions a contiguous chain of wild areas on both public and private lands so that a panther or cougar could walk from Panama to the U.S. border without leaving wilderness. The more we learn about nature, the more we realize that the only way to protect genetic biodiversity is to have large tracts of habitat and corridors so that mixing and movement can take place. Most of the Central American countries are in agreement with the idea. Belize is doing an excellent job protecting wilderness. Can you imagine the impact of a Path of the Panther from Tierra del Fuego to British Columbia? The panther is a flagship species. If its “pathway” can be protected, it will be a blessing for all the plants and animals and humans in the future”.– Robert Bateman

Reclining Snow Leopard – 15″ x 28 1/2″ – 1250 Signed and Numbered Paper Print

“The snow leopard lives in the most remote and rugged knots of mountains in the world – the Himalayas, the Hindu Kush, the Kunluns — the mountain ranges of Central Asia. The land of the snow leopard is forbidden and forbidding land; it is the land of Shangri-La, of yeti (the abominable snowman), and of the ancient, sacred and otherworldly cultures of Tibet, Nepal and Afghanistan.

If the lion is king of the savanna, then the snow leopard is the king of the highest elevations. Of all the cats, the snow leopard is, perhaps, the most mysterious. It is rarely seen, even by scientists dedicated to its study. The coat of the snow leopard perfectly blends with the rock and snow of its native terrain. In this painting, I have shown this magnificent animal reclining on a rocky ledge — secure in his sense of kingdom and concealment — but due to human pressures, not secure in his future.” – Robert Bateman
