In this landscape I was awed by the sense of endlessly lonely lakes, rivers and mountains and beyond them more lonely lakes, rivers and mountains. A man could walk into this land for weeks and never see other human evidence.

However, on second thought, the land is not lonely and is far from empty. This is the home of countless creatures, from elk or bear, raven or eagle, down to mouse or chickadee. Beneath the ice and snow are countless other creatures from beaver to insect, all awaiting the bountiful surge of spring.

In a sense, the subject of this painting is not just a herd of bull elk and a couple of ravens, but the atmosphere, geology, waterways, forests and the numerous unseen dwellers of this awesome land.”

Biography

Robert Bateman has been called the most famous living artist. He continues to paint and tour the world to promote conservation and preservation of nature. We have represented Robert Bateman for decades and are now the sole publisher and distributor of his reproductions. We are so honored to work with him and witness his success. He has made such a massive contribution to the art world and the natural world as an artist and educator of the earth’s most important resources.

Nature as a subject is becoming more and more popular as our environment is in peril. What better subject is there than the beautiful creatures we share this world with? Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once.

Bateman’s eye for composition is unparalleled. Each painting is a composed like a symphony, leading the eye to wander. From the backyards of North America to the sprawling plains of Africa. Robert Bateman captures nature the way it should be enjoyed. Above all he is a champion of wildlife. For this reason he has become a household name for art collectors.

“This painting has both the bald eagle and the cedar stump. The bald eagle is a natural heritage. I guess you might say the big cedar stump is the human heritage. Although it’s natural heritage to the great West Coast Cedars, some of the trees are immense. They almost all flare at the bottom kind of like a buttress root that you get in tropical rainforest. That creates a bit of an issue for the loggers with these big crosscut saws to cut them down at waist height, which is the natural height you’re going to be doing. Two men saws require one on each end, pulling it towards you and then the other guy pulls it back and you pull it toward you. They hit upon a way of cutting a notch and putting a plank there and then they stand up on the plank and then they could saw the tree where it was a little more reasonable effort to get through. The trees have a notch on one side and two guys would stand there on the plank.
Since cedar lasts so long, there are stumps all over BC which are lasting decades and decades and decades if not maybe centuries and there they are, like a relic, like a castle, like an old building. They are a relic of human activity and a relic of those, the great age of the tree, so I look upon that stump as part of human heritage.” – Robert Bateman

This painting was created for the Robert Bateman Centre, which opened in May 2013 in Victoria BC. Robert wanted to highlight the fragility of natural and human heritage, in this case the bald eagle and the western red cedar stump. This particular stump is near Courtney, on Vancouver Island.

Ravens are one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, the highly intelligent Corvidae family, rivalling great apes and dolphins. For many indigenous cultures, the raven is a powerful symbol of creation, knowledge and transformation. Ravens are magical creatures, able to take the form of humans, animal, even in adamant objects. They are the keeper of secrets, often known as a trickster figure due to its mischief and curiosity. Ravens are also seen as a creative and cunning helper to the creator who can shape shift and bring important messages for humans. Like homo sapiens, ravens plan for the future, have exceptional memories, particularly for faces and past events. Living in complex, social groups, ravens can recognize individuals and remember relationships. Ravens engage in complex, social behaviors, such as tactical deception and comforting others after conflicts, families are formed and they stick together. With a large repertoire of distinct calls, ravens can communicate a wide range of messages. They are also skilled mimics, able to imitate various sounds, including human speech. Ravens are known throughout the world as messengers, and tricksters. Nature’s Scene is a family business and approaching 50 years. I am excited to release these tow Raven pieces, a transformative new beginning we have all been hoping for.

“I wanted to catch the feeling of a bright and breezy summer day. The puffins make me think of old-time British sailors, and the color of their bills reminds me of the nautical flags and bunting decorating the sailing ships.

It was in just sparkling weather that I spent a day and a night on a puffin colony island. It was here that I saw the sad side of their existence. They are struggling for survival against the herring gull which has increased because of man’s more wholesale and wasteful modern fishing. The little puffins are laborious fliers and must go many miles out to sea and struggle back with their catch only to be robbed and harassed by the gulls.

As the puffin chicks get hungrier, they come closer to the burrow entrance whereupon the gulls seize them and eat them. This side of the puffins’ existence makes his tragic-comic clown expression even more poignant.” – Robert Bateman

“Often I am asked, especially by artists, where the ideas for my paintings come from. Out of the blue could be an answer. One was a red turban in front of a terra cotta wall – “Cardinal and Sumac.” “Cardinal and Wild Apples” grew out of Joni Mitchell’s song “The Big Yellow Taxi.” Abstract artist Clyfford Still’s work has inspired several paintings, “Sheer Drop – Mountain Goats,” “Descending Leopard,” and “Wadi Arava – Israeli Wolf.

Last year while visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art I saw another Clyfford Still incorporating a large black patch with little jagged windows of deep blue. The idea for a big Douglas Fir at night came to me at once. The sleeping ravens were an obvious added touch since we have both large fir trees and ravens on the hill above our house.” – Robert Bateman on Raven Roost

“One of the wonderful sights in the kingdom of birds is the aerial acrobatics of ravens. These are often accompanied by surprising and complex vocalizations. For years I have been trying different ways to paint these dramatic black birds. Recently I was looking through my art books and happened upon a large, soft-covered book describing the development of a single painting by Robert Motherwell. Motherwell, along with Franz Kline and Clyfford Still, is one of my favourite abstract painters. The painting in question, which was installed in the National Gallery in Washington, DC, is called “Reconciliation Elegy”. Because I am a naturalist and have been looking for a flying raven idea for years, a light popped on in my brain. I used Motherwell’s composition as a starting point and added my own photo reference and sketches to come up with the final piece. I included the word reconciliation in my title as a respectful tip of the hat to Robert Motherwell. Perhaps the ravens have had a nuptial spat and are now reconciling.” – Robert Bateman
