“Winter is an excellent time to see the larger animals that do not hibernate. The leaves are not on the trees which gives better visibility; the snow makes wildlife easier to see, and you can follow the tracks. In addition, the animals tend to come down to the river valleys in concentrations that can be more easily observed. Moose do not have as hard a time in winter as do deer and the fur bearing animals. Bears, of course, hibernate, and beavers spend the winter in their ponds under the ice. A moose is designed for winter. Their long legs are a great help in striding through the snow, and the dense fur keeps out the cold. They can eat twigs of many different trees but are greatly helped by some open water so that the aquatic vegetation can supplement their diet.

In this painting I have shown a bull moose about to cross a beaver dam in early winter. The pond has not yet frozen. Although the sun has set, there is a glow in the sky which, in this case, shows mostly in the water. Besides portraying a mood of time and place, the interesting challenge, for me, was to show the textures and colours of the water, ice and snow. They are all H2O, yet their physical properties do different things with light.” – Robert Bateman

“I was honoured to be commissioned to do a painting which was to be the present of the Government of Canada to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales when he was married. The suggested subject of the painting was loons, which delighted me as they are among my favourite birds, with wonderful associations with the Canadian northland. Their ringing call is one of the north’s most memorable sounds. The setting of the painting is in Killarney Park in northern Ontario, and the pre-Cambrian quartzite cliff, the clear water and the plants and bushes are all very typical of this part of Canada. Looking at these cliff faces is almost like looking at a painted mural. Nature has been working on it, building up a pattern of lichens and mosses and ferns. I wanted to
recreate this mural effect, and established a strong abstract shape that is repeated in the reflection in a broken-up, many-faceted impressionist way. The scene is placid, but the composition’s interest comes from the tension set up by having the loons in the bottom right-hand corner and the overhanging hemlock branches up on the left. The lighting is fundamental to the effect of this painting. I put almost the entire painting in shadow, with the accents coming from the highlights. The early morning light is striking across the scene, picking up just a bit of the cliff face and the heads of the two adult loons.” – Robert Bateman

“On a visit to the Queen Charlotte Islands, a Haida elder guided my wife, Birgit, and me to a secluded spot on a peaceful bay. There, Bill Reid’s canoe
sat at a lonely anchorage. It was Reid who directed the hollowing of the 50-foot canoe from a single ancient red cedar according to traditional Haida designs, following their traditional method. The canoe was the first of its kind in almost one hundred years. Powered by 20 Haida paddlers, it made an epic 558-mile journey from Vancouver to Skidegate and truly earned its name, Loo Taa (Wave Eater). Seeing the canoe was, for me, a kind of spiritual experience. And although there was no raven present on that day, in my mind’s eye, I saw one. To the Haida, the raven is a wily trickster-transformer who created the world, and I could see him, hovering over the canoe, perfectly centered.” – Robert Bateman

“All animals play, especially young animals. This is very evident to anyone who has ever had a pet cat or dog. Play, however, often contains a foretaste of the real world of survival…competition, aggression and dominance are only slightly beneath the surface. A cat playing with a mouse is an experience that is not much fun for the mouse.

This is a young Siberian tiger I saw in a Canadian game park. His northern ancestry makes him perfectly suited to the snow. He is almost fully grown, but his youthful heart cannot resist a frolic in the freshly fallen snow and, bounding about, he has been doing pretend pounces and mock charges. Suddenly, he stops in mid-dash. The next second is unpredictable – he may roll on his back, or he may attack.” – Robert Bateman.

“The story of the great herds of bison that once roamed North America is well known and maybe even legendary. The shameful fact is, however, that we do not need legends to tell the story of those herds. They were recorded and documented in recent history by so-called civilized man. Newspapers and railways played a part in the great slaughter. Buffalo slaying trips were advertised and organized. It was done on purpose, and it was done not long ago, part of an official government program to destroy the way of life of the original peoples. And a bit of profit was made in the bargain.

The native nations of the great plains worked and lived with nature. The bison were their source of food, clothing and shelter. It seemed almost beyond belief that such vast herds could be exterminated in so short a time.

I called this painting “Chief” for several reasons. This is obviously a dominant male rushing along, turning as he goes to confront a potential enemy. Many of the wise old aboriginal chiefs whose lives were linked to the bison were also fierce and powerful. Lastly, we had a dear friend, another dominant male, who has departed. His nickname was “Chief.” – Robert Bateman

He has made such a massive contribution to the art world and the natural world as an artist and educator of the earth’s most important resources.

Nature as a subject is becoming more and more popular as our environment is in peril. What better subject is there than the beautiful creatures we share this world with? Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once.

Bateman’s eye for composition is unparalleled. Each painting is a composed like a symphony, leading the eye to wander.
“This painting presented a challenge. In order to make the animal stand out, the logical place to put it would have been in front of the dark vegetation,
but I thought it would be more interesting to paint the hare as nature had intended it – white on white.” – Robert Bateman

Biography

Robert Bateman has been called the most famous living artist. He continues to paint and tour the world to promote conservation and preservation of nature. We have represented Robert Bateman for decades and are now the sole publisher and distributor of his reproductions. We are so honored to work with him and witness his success.

From the backyards of North America to the sprawling plains of Africa. Robert Bateman captures nature the way it should be enjoyed. Above all he is a champion of wildlife. For this reason he has become a household name for art collectors.
