“Secretive and solitary, the endangered Bengal tiger still roams Northwest India’s spectacular park, Ranthambhore. While the tiger is not always easy to see in this region of mountainous plateaus and rugged ravines, its presence can be felt: “While exploring the ruins of the Hindu kingdom, we came upon a little lake with a small temple perched perfectly on a peninsula. We were there at midday, but in my mind’s eye, I saw it at dawn, or by moonlight, perhaps twilight. There could be a tiger, emerging from the shelter of the temple, looking out over the lake.” – Robert Bateman

“If a polar bear is a dangerous animal, it becomes really dangerous when it has cubs; but if there is no danger to the young, one cannot imagine a more peaceful mother. In Mother of Pearls, I wanted to have the feeling of being part of that family, close to that big, soft, wild mother.”,- Carl Brenders

“I have never thought that art should be pretty and comfortable. For most living things, life is tough and relatively short. On balance, however, life is absorbing and exciting and well worth the effort. In this picture, I wanted to show one of the more miserable moments in the day of an osprey. This is a painting in the tradition of the great Japanese woodblock artist, Hokusai, who showed life in all its aspects.”

Blanket 1 – 12″ x 24″ – Original Oil on Canvas by David Grieve

David Grieve lives in Brantford Ontario with his wife and three sons. This is an area with a lot of sprawling farmland and forests which is where David finds his muse. He will often focus on lone trees in farm fields. Usually a tree changing color, when it is in its most vibrant state. His bright palette reflects the rich tones of a countryside that is changing constantly. The family cabin and studio also provides inspiration. David’s paintings of cottage country are very popular. Towering pines and luminous shorelines are some of David’s best work.

David’s rural scenes capture Southern Ontario and beyond with a multi-layered approach and a broad brush. He uses thick strokes of oil paint in an impressionistic translation of a landscape. David rarely cleans his brushes. As a result he achieves dramatic, chunky swaths of paint. This is the style that he is loved for.

Throughout his painting career David received numerous awards and scholarships. His solo and group exhibitions have entered into public and commercial galleries in the U.S. and in Canada. David is represented by Nature’s Scene in Canada. You will find his work in many galleries in North America.

“Scolding – Chickadee and Screech Owl” – 11 1/2″ x 23 3/8″ – Edition of 2500 – Call for price

“The Scolding” depicts one of those small domestic dramas that we all encounter every now and then; the only difference is that this is a wilderness drama. The chickadees are ‘mobbing’ or ‘scolding’ the screech owl, who had tried to hide deep in the boughs of a tree during the day. Chickadees, however, are so little and delicate that the word ‘mob’ really doesn’t seem to fit them. Birds very often mob owls, partly because the owls are a threat to them and partly because owls are at rest during the day. After discovering a predator such as this owl, the birds will all come around and scold it – jumping and fluttering and making noise – so that everyone knows where the owl is concealed. Visually, I was most intrigued with the latticed background of this scene. It was so lively, in fact, with its snow-festooned branches, that I used strong contrast on the chickadees; they would not otherwise have popped out from the background. I chose a close-up view of the scolding to emphasize the unfolding drama.”
