“This is simply a portrait study of a white gyrfalcon. I sometimes do this rather than a full painting so that I can pictorially examine the planes and shapes in the most interesting part of a bird or mammal. I usually learn things that help me in my larger paintings.

There were three interesting aspects to this work. Falcons have an expression about the eyes which is dignified and strong, yet with a certain warmth. It reminds me of the expression of a racehorse. To me, the interlocking shapes of the bill, mouth and bare skin in front of the eye are reminiscent of the elegant sculptures of ancient Egypt or northwestern American Indian totem poles. The third aspect I enjoyed
playing with in this painting was the modulation of shape in the feather forms and markings. Modulation is the gradual change from one characteristic to another. The feathers change from small to large
and from pointed to rounded. The markings do likewise but not necessarily corresponding to the feathers in size and shape

In summary, one can find as much of visual interest in part of a bird as in a whole landscape” – Robert Bateman
