“The Northwest Pacific coast of North America is an excting place. Through most of its capes and bays nature rules and probably always will. The great ocean swells build up on their journey from Japan. The coastal mountains have been chopped into a ragged and forbidding shoreline. therefore all of the living things that have evolved to fit that environment can live their lives almost without human contact. This is the domain of the bald eagle. They have fish to feed on and great trees to nest in.What more would they need?

I have been lucky enough to explore parts of the coast of British Columbia and Alaska by float plane. We fly low enough to appreciate the details of the cliffs, islands and forests, visiting places with our eyes that we could never dream of visiting with our feet. In fact, we fly at eagle height. We can, fora time, be an eagle scanning the land below. However, our eyes don’t compare to those of an eagle for sharpness. But, for a short time, I feel privileged to be given eagle wings, if only in my imagination.”

Nature as a subject is becoming more and more popular as our environment is in peril. What better subject is there than the beautiful creatures we share this world with? Robert Bateman’s appreciation and understanding of nature are apparent in his paintings. He is able to paint flora and fauna the way your eye would perceive it in real life. It is important that the animal takes full attention. The background becomes muted, and therefore it doesn’t take too much focus away from the subject. His paintings seem effortless and masterful all at once.
